Why you should do a Blood Test before any Op?

Pre-anesthetic blood tests are a crucial step in ensuring the safety & well-being of your pet during medical procedures involving general anesthesia. Any surgery, no matter how minor, carries its own risks.

When it comes to medical procedures, especially those involving general anesthesia (GA), taking proactive measures can make all the difference. Before any procedure that requires general anesthesia, veterinarians usually recommend performing a full blood test on your pet. If they do not, you can still request for it for the benefit of your pet.

This simple yet essential test helps to assess your pet's overall health and identify any underlying conditions that might affect the anesthesia or the procedure itself.

Pre-anesthetic blood tests can reveal underlying health conditions such as anemia, infections, liver or kidney disease & diabetes. Detecting these issues early on can help your veterinarian tailor the anesthesia protocol to suit your pet's specific needs, reducing the risk of complications during and after the procedure.

Let us look at why we should do a Blood Test before any Op.

1. Assessment of Organ Function

These tests provide valuable information about the function of your pet's overally health, vital organs, including the liver & kidneys. Proper organ function is crucial for the metabolism & elimination of anesthesia drugs. Any abnormalities in organ function can impact how your pet processes anesthesia, making the test essential for ensuring their safety.

For example, if a cat is dehydrated, your vet may recommend your cat be hospitalized prior to surgery to be on IV drips for rehydration.

2. Evaluation of Blood Clotting Ability

Blood tests can assess your pet's blood clotting ability, which is crucial for surgical procedures. Knowing if your pet has any clotting disorders beforehand can help your vet take necessary precautions during the procedure to prevent excessive bleeding.

3. Customized Anesthesia Plan

Based on the results of the blood tests, your veterinarian can tailor an anesthesia plan that is safe & effective for your pet's specific health status. This personalized approach minimizes the risks associated with anesthesia & ensures a smoother recovery.

4. Peace of Mind for Pet Owners

Knowing that your pet has undergone thorough testing before anesthesia can provide peace of mind. It shows that your vet is taking every possible precaution to ensure your pet's well-being during the procedure.
