The Case of the Pesky Ants - how to deal with ants in food

Updated: Aug 18, 2023

We have all experienced this at some point. Where do them come from? How are they even appearing out of random windows? Why aren't the repellents working?

Many times when I am catsitting, I find lots of ants around the cat's food.

"We have tried everything, they just appear when we aren't home!"

I have some recommendations, but I will reveal to you my ultimate weapon.

1. Try to simply elevate the feeding bowls

Place the food bowls on a stand or purchase a pet food stand online.

2. Water Moat

The next method to try (but doesn't always work) is water.

You can purchase a water moat feeding bowl where you fill the bottom tray with water.

3. The cheap, DIY Water Moat

Fill a small tray (this was a $2 tray from Daiso) with water covering the base, and put the feeding bowl on top of it. Don't forget to elevate the tray.

4. The Ant Bait

Unfortunately, I have not had much luck with this. However, it's easy to use and remove. You can purchase it at any hardware store or supermarket.

5. The Ant Gel

Alas, the golden goose is a good ant gel. You can apply transparent dots along the ant trail and within a few days, viola, it's gone! It looks like transparent glue and you will have to be careful to hide it out of sight from the cats. You can purchase it at any hardware store or supermarket.

Good Luck!
