6 Factors to consider when Adopting a Cat or Kitten

Choosing the right cat to adopt is an important, life changing decision that should not be made in a haste. Instead, it should be be based on several factors to ensure a good match between you & the cat.

First & foremost, you will need to ask yourself the 7 Golden Questions on whether you are prepared to adopt a pet. When you are 100% ready, here are 6 Factors to consider when Adopting a Cat or Kitten.

1. Consider your Lifestyle:

Think about your daily routine and lifestyle. Are you active & outgoing, or do you prefer a more relaxed & quiet environment? This will help you determine whether you should adopt an active or a more laid-back cat to fit in with your personality. This also leads us to the next factor to consider.

2. The Age of the Cat:

Cats come in various age groups, including kittens, adolescents, adults, & seniors. Consider your preferences &energy level. Kittens are usually more active and playful, while older cats may be calmer & require less supervision.

3. Compatibility with Existing Pets:

If you already have other pets, consider how the new cat will fit into your existing pet family. Some cats get along well with other cats or other animals, while others are more suited to a single cat household instead.

4. Ethical Adoption Source:

Consider adopting from a shelter, rescue organization, or an independent rescuer. Adopting from a shelter or rescuer can give a homeless cat a loving home. It is important for you to gel well with the fosterer or rescuer, as you will likely be in touch long term. Most responsible rescuers ideally choose Adopters who are willing to keep in touch with them or at least have a social media presence (e.g FB, IG page) that they can follow to be informed of the cat's progress. A happy cat makes us happy too!

5. Health or Special Needs:

Assess the cat's health & any special needs it may have. Cats with medical conditions or disabilities may require extra care, attention & expenses. With that said, if you are able to, please consider adopting such a cat in need as they are the most difficult to rehome. Every cat deserves a good home, especially sick ones.

6. Patience & The Right Fit:

Take your time to find the right cat. It's important not to rush the decision, as finding the perfect fit may take time. Spend time interacting with the cat before making a decision. Cats have diverse personalities, so look for one that matches your preferences. Some cats are affectionate & sociable, while others may be more independent or reserved. But that doesn't mean that they are unable to shower you with love in their own way. Never adopt a cat solely based on looks.
